Customizing the perfect mix of pre-workout supplements can be difficult, and often needs to be adapted over time, if one benefit is a little too strong or a hoped for supplement isn’t quite fulfilling its purpose. This is an overview of the wide variety of nutrients, stimulants, and other ingredients that may be found in pre-workout supplements, from the synthetic to the all natural.
Caffeine- Starting with one of the more recognizable ingredients in many supplements, caffeine is familiar to anyone who has had a cup of coffee. Most supplements contain far more caffeine than a cup of coffee. This is because while caffeine does not actually reduce the need for sleep, it does have the benefit of decreasing the feeling of being tired.
BCAA (Branch Chain Amino Acid) – BCAAs are often used by fitness lovers looking to increase their muscle mass and gain weight. The most common of this family is leucine, which stimulates the creation of more protein in the muscles.
Synephrine – Although it hasn’t yet come under regulation, and more research would be beneficial, Synephrine is a substance rumored to improve energy, fat burning, weight loss, and metabolism.
Mucuna Pruriens – Mucuna Pruriens is an exotic plant that is sometimes included in pre-workout supplements because of its dopamine inducing properties. With the boost of dopamine, sensations of pain are decreased while happiness is increased.
Vinpocetine – This is a powerful anti-inflammatory which has been linked to improved brain function, memory, and concentration. Unlike many substances, Vinpocetine is compatible with many other herbs and extracts.
Beet Extract – Beet extract has been praised for the high concentration of nitrite. Studies have found that nitrite enables more oxygen to travel through the body to the muscles, improving energy and stamina overall. The extract or juice of beets also has other beneficial antioxidants, and can have a detoxifying effect.
These are just a few of the many, many nutrients and pre-workout supplements that can be combined or alternated to create a one of a kind workout.
